Time to talk about SIDS

Kali ini tulisan na agak laen, biar sekalian belajar bhs inggris hehehe...pokokna tentang bahaya tidur tengkurap untuk baby.

It's something we don't like to talk about, but it lingers in the back of every parent's mind as we lay our babies down to sleep. It's the reason we get up in the middle of night 'n listen to them breathe.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, known as SIDS is as ominous as it sound- a sudden unexplained death of an infant, ussually between the age of 1 month to 1 year. About 2500 babies die from SIDS in the United States each year, that's way October is US National SIDS awareness month, an opportunity arises to educate new parents on what they can do to reduce the risk factor that may cause SIDS and decrease their chance of being part of the statistic.

The greatest SIDS preventer has been the "Back to Sleep" campaign, which encourages parents to place their baby to sleep on his back, even for nap time. "Since 1992 when the American Academy of Paediatrics recommended (babies) sleep on their backs, the SIDS rate dropped by over 40%, "he explained. "We feel a lot of SIDS deaths are related to suffocation. The drop in rate proves that."
But what if your child suffers from reflux or spits up excessively? Is this a reason to place him on his stomach? No. Instead, the American Academy of Paediatrics recommends raising the baby's head 30 degrees either by placing him in an infant seat or by placing a book or rolled-up blanket under the crib mattress.

Another avoidable risk is smoking. "Keep them away from smoke," said Michael Motz (Ohio Paediatrician). "It's important not to smoke for a number of reason, but it should never be done around an infant."
According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, mothers who smoke during pregnancy are three times more likely to have a SIDS baby, and exposure to smoke after the baby is born double its risk of SIDS.

It's very important for pregnant women to get good nutrition and prenatal care order to reduce the risk of premature birth, another risk factor. Also, the SIDS rate babies born to teenage mothers is high.
Also, mothers should breast-feed when possible. Breast milk decreases the occurrence of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections and the SIDS rate for breast-fed infant is lower than of formula-fed infants.

As with autism, some researchers are looking for a correlation between vaccinations and SIDS. The Institute of Medicine says there is no reason to believe routine vaccinations cause SIDS. The experts there see the fact that most SIDS deaths occur between 2 and 4 months of age, the same time as many vaccines are given, as a coincidence.(dikutip dari weekend Magazine).
